Carolyn Regina Terrylynn Debraux Smith Slayton was born on July 31, 1962 to the late Thurman Sr. and Meredith Debraux. She was raised by her adopted parents Melvin and Gladys Smith. The Lord called her home on June 17, 2023, where she was surrounded by her loving family.
Carolyn was educated in the Hampton School District. At the age of 6, she was a classical trained pianist and won competitions at Hampton University. She graduated from Hampton High School with the Class of 1980. After attending Norfolk State University for two years, she was employed by Newport News Shipyard until she meet and married Glenn Slayton, the love of her life for 34 years. God blessed this union with 2 sons, Michael and Joseph. While enjoying her life as a homemaker, Carolyn also worked part-time at JCPenny and Lord & Taylor.
Carolyn accepted the Lord at an early age and was baptized at the St. Paul AME Church in Newport News, Virginia where she was the pianist and director for the Youth Choir. She was an associate member and church pianist/director of the Gospel Choir at Wesley Chapel in Lincoln, Delaware.
She was predeceased by her parents, Thurman Sr. and Meredith Debraux and Melvin and Gladys Smith; Brothers Dennis Lawery, Kimmie Debraux, Sandy Debraux; Sister Stephanie Debraux Braswell.
Carolyn leaves to cherish her memories a lovingly devoted husband, Glenn Slayton; Sons, Michael and Joseph; Brothers Thurman Debraux Jr. Chesapeake Virginia, Curtis Debraux (Alison), Bowie, Maryland, Shelton Debraux (Saundra) Fort Washington, Maryland; Sisters, Katherine Williams (Arron), Chesapeake, Virginia, Vivian Debraux and Shereal Debraux Newport News, Virginia; mother-in-law Winifred Slayton, Lincoln, Delaware, brother-in-law Jerome Slayton, Imperial Beach, California, sisters-in-law, Phyllis Slayton, Kathleen Slayton, and Monica Slayton, Lincoln, Delaware, God-daughter Shadae Debraux Fort Washington, Maryland and a host of relatives and friends.
